October 2013

Announcing the Women in Tech Meetup with Ada’s List at Internet Week Europe 2013 – November 12th

London is celebrating Internet Week Europe from November 11-15, a ‘celebration of everything internet-y’ as their website says. Yes, that’s the week after next…and we thought it would be a great occasion to organise our first Ada’s List meetup – why not, right?!

We will have a few smart women doing short Ignite-style talks about technology-related topics close to their heart, with speakers hosted by the awesome 300 Seconds. You’ll also have the chance to ask some experienced speakers about what it takes to be a great speaker yourself.

Here’s what you need to know:

When: 12th November, Tuesday, from 6.30pm to 10pm

Where: The Village Hall, Shoreditch Works, 33 Hoxton Square, London N1 6NN

What: 5-6 speakers (TBC), followed by drinks and conversation

Tickets are free but essential – you can get them from our Eventbrite page here.

Dudes welcome, as long as they are not (whisper it) brogrammers 🙂

We’ll definitely need volunteers to help us on the day; if you’d like to pitch in, please drop us a line on twitter @adaslist – it will be much appreciated!

So please hold the date and spread the word to friends, family or colleagues you think may like to attend – we look forward to meeting you all in person on November 12th!

"I don’t shine if you don’t shine"

Yesterday was Ada Lovelace Day. Ada’s not only the namesake of this site, but she’s also (way more importantly) the first person to write a programming language. On paper. Called the “Analytical Engine,” Ada and her colleagues mapped out the earliest version of what one day became a computer.

Ada Lovelace Day is a day to celebrate the achievements of women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

The Shine Theory + Ada Lovelace

The Shine Theory is an idea posited by Aminatou Sow and Ann Friedman – in short, if we surround ourselves by smart, successful, fun, crazy cool women, maybe some of that awesome-ness will rub off on us simply by proximity. Let’s make Ada Lovelace Day a year round thing – let’s shine like the bright stars we are – and find some brighter stars and befriend them – and all make the world a bit of a better, brighter place. @merici

Yesterday was Ada Lovelace Day, the annual celebration of women in STEM founded by Suw Charman-Anderson in 2009.

In keeping with the spirit of the day and to celebrate Ada’s List, here are our answers to 3 quick questions about women in tech:

1. Name a woman in tech, other than Ada Lovelace, who’s really inspired you.

Merici Vinton: ONE PERSON?! Impossible…where to begin.  Elizabeth Warren – she’s not at all in technology, but she provided the leadership, complementary vision and support necessary to do my job at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. @katies for being awesome, giving some invaluable advice, and passing my resume along. Other community organizers – the Li.st founders @rachelsklar and @GlynnMacN AND Tech Ladymafiafounders @aminatou and @erie. Fearless warriors who are working to make tech better and safer for women – @ashedryden and @shanley.

Nicki Sprinz: Iris Lapinski, CEO, Apps for Good. She’s at the forefront of changing education by inspiring kids to innovate with technology.

Rosa Birch:  Iris Lapinski – CEO of Apps for Good. Iris has built an incredible organization in Apps for Good that inspires young people to think about the changes they can make in the world through technology as well as delivering key skills to help them in their future careers. Iris is totally passionate about technology and has so much impact.

Anjali Ramachandran: Genevieve Bell, anthropologist and user experience researcher at Intel because I think without understanding people you can’t really make technology work the way it should, and she’s great at that.

2. If there was one thing you helped bring about through Ada’s List, looking one year down the line, what would that be?

Merici:  At least 20 people from Ada’s List will have hired other women from the list or found a job from the list. Lots of sass, fewer apologies (!!).

Nicki:  If one woman finds a mentor, or another her dream job, or someone discovers their future co-founder, then for me Ada’s List will have been a success.

Rosa:  Help raise the profile of the diversity of women in the tech world, particularly in London and to create a community of ladies in tech.

Anjali: Make women feel they are a valued part of a community that shares similar aspirations, hopes and dreams (you are not alone!), and help at least 10 women climb significantly higher in their careers through sharing information that they might not have got otherwise.

3. What’s your favourite website related to women in tech?

Merici: Twitter.

Nicki:  It’s still very much in an embryonic state, but I’m very excited about the potential of Articulate, founded by the ladies at Caper.

Rosa: I really love the work that She ++ are doing in the US and would love to have something like that with European voices.

Anjali: Geekmom. There’s loads of inspiration there for everyone.

From all of us at Ada’s List, here’s to Ada Lovelace and all the women in the world who hope to change the world through technology!

Introducing Ada’s List.

Hi.

Let’s try something out: let’s see what happens when you get a bunch of awesome ladies who work in/around the internet (more below on what that actually means) who live in the UK (or anywhere, really) together to swap big wins, fails, job postings, and advice.

You in?

Join Ada’s List.

About:

Ada Lovelace wrote the first programming language in 1842.  Lots of other women have contributed to the internet and science since. Let’s elevate our profiles – together – and get stuff done.

Who are we:

Women who, broadly speaking, work in science, technology, engineering or mathematics.

AKA: ladies who work in or around the internet. Digital strategists, scientists, designers, physicists, mathematicians, makers, journalists, developers, service designers, sci fi authors, tech journalists, rocket scientists, online campaigners,

What’s Ada’s List:

  • a forum where ladies can talk off the record about professional, tech and science related topics
  • share job listings (yeah, that’s right – let’s create a wicked pipeline of talented women across all of our industries, companies, startups, etc)
  • conference panels and calls for submissions
  • a great place to find talented ladies to write about…and maybe some sources
  • support for co-founders, entrepreneurs, freelancers, corporate innovators
  • informal mentoring
  • sharing some cool, related events

What we’re not:

  • brogrammers

Where:

  • Global, but with an eye on growing the London and UK ladies in tech scene

Can I join?

  • hell yeah

SHOUT OUTS to the ladies who came before us and inspired us:

  • Ada Lovelace, the Tech LadyMafia, the Li.st, @suw / Ada Lovelace Day, and the many of you who we work with daily and adore.
