As part of a panel on the "State of Female Justice," the actress told a fascinating — and very telling — story about doing a gender-swapped reading of the script for American Pie. The swap resulted in the women getting "all the good lines" and laughs, while the men were sidelined to the roles of supporting props. "The men who joined us to sit on stage started squirming rather uncomfortably and got really bored because they weren’t used to being the supporting cast," Wilde said. "It was fascinating to feel their discomfort [and] to discuss it with them afterwards, when they said, ‘It’s boring to play the girl role!’ And I said, ‘Yeah. Yeah. You think?! Welcome to our world!’"policymic.com

“Just for a week I’d replace every man on a senior university committee with a woman. There still aren’t enough women in key roles; and one reason is that women are far less likely to get the sort of exposure needed to understand what these roles require or that they actually possess the talent to take them on. Alice Eagly argues that women find it more difficult to navigate the leadership labyrinth because they lack access to the type of insider knowledge and advice that aids their male colleagues. For this reason I’d also implement an annual “shadow week“ where junior faculty from under-represented groups get an opportunity to shadow a senior university figure. It really is time to level the playing field.”—Jo Silvester, Professor of Psychology at Cass Business School, City University, in the Financial Times

“A study of companies listed on the FTSE 350 index published in the Economic Journal found there was a 20% chance of an employer appointing a woman if another woman left its board. This likelihood fell to 10% when a man had held the post.”—HR Magazine

“

My advice to a young female founder starting out today would be to develop a support group of other founders whom you trust and to whom you can turn for advice. Avoid doing business with men who relate to you as a wife or a daughter — no matter what you think they can bring to the table. And keep looking for gold — those men who give direct feedback and consider you a peer. It’s amazing how a few people like this can make a huge difference.

But recognize that there will be times when you are stressed and emotional, when you will find yourself in weird and uncomfortable situations. It’s all part of the journey for members of the 3 percent.

“When we focus on helping individuals get on in science and engineering, we help maintain a system that is often the main problem. There is little to be gained in helping a few people climb career ladders set on unstable ground. Such projects may empower women and do a lot of good, but they miss the bigger picture and the possibility for more visionary change.
Courses to help women in science to speak up? No, others need courses in how to shut up. If women and science don’t connect, it’s probably a sign that the latter needs to change.”

Ada’s List breakfast hosted by TaskRabbit – thank you!

This is a slightly late post but better late than never!

Last week, the lovely ladies at TaskRabbit, some of whom are Ada’s List members, very graciously hosted a breakfast get-together for us at the posh Smith’s of Smithfield in London.

We chatted. We laughed. We made new friends. And we found out a bit more about a very interesting start-up that’s recently made the move from the US to the UK. If you’d like to hire anyone to do anything for you, from odd jobs at home to filling in staffing gaps at work, then take a look at TaskRabbit.

Thank you so much to Lauren Sherman from TaskRabbit, + Lora Schellenberg and Courtney Boyd-Myers from Audience.io who made this happen. It was fun!
