Why Women Don’t Apply for Jobs Unless They’re 100% Qualifiedblogs.hbr.org

It’s not because they lack confidence.

It’s because we don’t know how the hiring process works.

“I will raise a slightly academic point that I believe needs to be raised more often: Women in tech aren’t an issue if you understand technology in a broad sense. Women are nurses, women are bioengineers, women manage all sorts of machines in a lot of capacities and industries which require a high level of technical skill. Women in tech is a framing device that has limited value. This is not to say that women are common in executive roles or even in any role in startups, but women are considered a problem with or without coding or executive skills. We live in a world where being born a woman is a dangerous proposition.”—Margarita Noriega of Fusion: ‘Women in tech is a framing device with limited value’ in Forbes

Victoria Song: We Can Create Our Own Opportunitiesblogs.wsj.com

Victoria Song, founder and CEO of So She Did: As a young investor without an existing network in technology or venture capital circles, I wasn’t getting emails, introductions or invitations to events. So I created my own event: the Angel Dinner Series, a monthly intimate dinner where talented entrepreneurs looking to raise seed funding could meet and talk with prominent angel investors. When I created the invitation list for each dinner, I aimed to ensure that at least one-third of the entrepreneurs were women. …

“Zaleski estimates about half PowerToFly’s workforce is mothers. (“One of our theses is that working mothers are the most efficient work goup in many ways,” she said. “They’ll tell you exactly when they will get something done.”) Lots of others are women who can’t afford to move to geographic areas with lots of tech jobs. Some are overseas, a situation that can be very complicated for companies who want to hire them. Others have long commutes. Others just need a new gig.”—Great article looking at a new startup called Power to Fly that’s focussing on getting women employed – by their rules.

How she’s working to narrow skill and gender gaps in manufacturingchicagotribune.com

Growing up, Diana Peters hung out with her dad, Alex Kogan, at his Skokie tool and die shop, Symbol Tool Inc. When they saw a growing shortage of skilled workers to operate advanced systems to run the machines that produce parts, they founded Symbol Training Institute, a for-profit vocational school. Opened in 2005 in the original shop, Symbol teaches workers on computer numerical control (CNC) machines and has expanded in new locations in Skokie and Addison. Peters, the institute’s executive director, explains how she’s helping to narrow manufacturing’s skill and gender gaps.

Of the participating organization, those in the top 20% financially had almost twice as many women in leadership roles, as well as more high-potential women holding those roles.”—Why the most successful organizations have women and millennials in charge via Fast Company

Ed Zimmerman: My Pledge Against Gender Bias in Techblogs.wsj.com

ED ZIMMERMAN: If you want to invite me to a business dinner (or lunch or drinks) and you expect at least 10 people to attend, make sure women are included (and note, “women” is the plural of woman). Otherwise, don’t invite me. If you’d like me to speak on a panel and you plan to include four or more other speakers, make sure at least one is a woman (and not a “token” female). Otherwise, I’m out. Anyone want to join me in stating that you’re willing to stick to these two simple pledges? …

“This trio of one-inch female scientists was created by Ellen Kooijman, a “real-life geoscientist,” and selected by vote among LEGO Ideas members. It was so popular, it beat out a set based on Sherlock. This is a big deal for “girl power,” as a male commenter from Canada noted.”—Yay for Lego’s female scientist set could inspire a generation of girls to become scientists

Pioneering Women in Venture Capital: Kathryn Gouldsteveblank.com

I understand a third of the class is women. I have always said, with an annoyed attitude when people ask, that there are no obstacles to women these days, just look at me! That’s the safe way to answer, right? But it’s not entirely true. One of the gifts of talking to you ladies here is that I forced myself to reflect on this.

What women need today are more models of successful CEOs that are women, says @collinmathilde – The Accelerators – WSJblogs.wsj.com

Mathilde Collin, co-founder and CEO of Frontapp: I’m the CEO of a tech startup. For the past year, I’ve been managing a growing team, developing a product, raising funds and dealing with the ups and downs on a daily basis. Just usual CEO work, basically. I also happen to be a woman. Yet, this fact alone leads to a lot of questions regarding my “situation”: How do I manage day in and day out? Isn’t it just plain too hard? How is it to fight an uphill battle? And so on. Because, you know, it’s always tougher for women, right? …
