“The logical conclusion seems to be that simply spending money on diversity initiatives meant to attract the attention of non-white, non-male potential hires once their careers are already underway is a bandaid on a larger cultural problem. Considering the magnitude of the problem, it would certainly be nice to see companies that are struggling to hire diverse staffs contribute in some way to early stage education that could help teens connect the phones in their hands to their dreams for the future.”—The 21st century has really not been great for women and minorities in STEM in Buzzfeed

“

It is the responsibility of everyone: teachers and campaigners working tirelessly at the grassroots; politicians pushing for better STEM education and better technology education and skills; the media to track down and give voice to female talent; female entrepreneurs and investors who have to fight even harder to break through and need to make themselves heard; and to the establishment, which has to recognise that diverse businesses make better products, more money and better represent the future of our fabulously talented nation of engineers, designers and technologists.

If not, the only thing the UK will do better than Silicon valley is institutional sexism.

Lindsey Keighley, Programme Delivery Manager, GOV.UK

Leisa Reichelt, Head of User Research @ GDS

Emma Stace, Head of Agency Transformation, Enabling Strategy @ GDS

“

Maybe I’m an optimist but I’m convinced things are changing. The change is slow and there’s certainly more to be done but right now, for women who work or want to work in tech, there are more education and support networks than ever before.

Included in this list are think code academies such as Code First Girls, Girls in Tech’s newly launched mentoring scheme, and supportive, diverse community, Ada’s List. And supermodel Karlie Kloss has launched a foundation to get teen girls coding.

If you see an all-male or all-white or all-anything panel and have the qualifications to contribute, don’t wait for someone to offer you a seat.

Just ask.

“When we do make a noise, stand up for what’s right, have an open conversation about gender balance in science—even if that conversation is conducted as a virtual shouting match—we remind each other of the essential importance of equality. And we move, all of us, in a direction that matters.”—Deborah Blum, who was a co-panellist with Tim Hunt at the conference in Korea, on why it matters that there was a furore in the media, quoted in the Daily Beast

“If you don’t have a diverse team, you are automatically limiting the terrain for creativity. If two people think the same then one of them is irrelevant. Women have a different pool of life experience to draw upon.”—Kat Gordon, at the 3 per cent London conference last week

“Get a load of white, middle class, men together they will form a tribe and there will be bias towards other white middle class men. But implicit in that is that there are people in senior positions who, if there was a level playing field, may not be sitting here. People don’t like that.”—Nick Bailey, at the 3 per cent London conference last week, quoted in Campaign

“If women look at an agency and think it has the same crusty model they’ve seen for the last 25 years they’ll think, ‘why the fuck would I go there? It’s going to be awful.’”—Nils Leonard, quoted at the 3 Per Cent Conference London in Campaign
